An arraignment is a term for the formal reading of a criminal complaint, in the presence of the defendant, to inform him/her of the charges against him/her. In response to arraignment, the accused may enter a plea. In general, pleas can be"guilty", "not guilty", and the pre-emptory pleas, which set out reasons why a trial cannot proceed.
If you were arrested and remain in jail after your arrest, you must be brought before a judge for arraignment within 24-48 hours after arrest, so that a judge may determine whether there was probable cause to arrest you.
